Been thinking about the relationship between Marketing and The Music Industry recently, and wondered whether it is right that Limited Editions are being charged at a very high mark-up compared to the standard versions. After all, are Limited Editions, Limited afterall?
What if the £180 Velociraptor deluxe album sold out in the first day...? Would they make more if they knew they could make money..?
Genuine question as I don't know if there's a law in place to say along these words:
"By using the words 'Limited Edition' anywhere on Promo or Packaging, you agree to manufacture 'x' amount of copies before launch and not to produce any more over that contracted amount".
I know it may seem a minor issue. But do we actually know how many of these limited editions Sony produce? I'm currently bidding on the Kasabian - Kasabian limited edition album in which the seller states that it's a rare item. But how many did Sony Records actually produce? Is it actually rare?
What i'm trying to get at is the issue of whether we are getting duped into thinking we are buying something limited or rare, when in fact the records company could produce as many as they like.... without stating how many they have manufactured, and thus tarnishing the rarity of the item and decreasing its value.
Gaming is going down the same route and I can just feel the desperation amongst companies to make money - though I don't blame them too much when most of us are buying through digital more than ever and this creates losses for all stakeholders concerned.
I guess the idea of Limited Editions in the entertainment industry is a grey area, and thus getting to an answer may be difficult.
